OUR COFOUNDERS

GEORGIA PAPANICOLAOU & SAMANTHA BRANDERHORST

Georgia Papanicolaou and Samantha Branderhorst met while volunteering at The Regent Theatre and worked together for the first time filling in for a couple of technical operators in a show in Belleville Ontario. They discovered they both had a desire to create different, thought-provoking works and that passion brought these two County Women together to start their own theatre company.

A veteran of the county’s community theatre scene, Papanicoloau has been actively pushing boundaries for some time in the plays she chooses.  She’s an award winning director and actor and has stage credits in edgy shows like God of Carnage and The Rocky Horror Show. She admits she likes to push the boundaries more than some community theatre groups would deem comfortable. “I wan’t to produce work that engages people’s minds and starts a conversation. There’s a misconception about what community or amateur theatre looks like in a rural setting, that you can’t produce these kinds of works in a small town. Can’t isn’t in my vocabulary, nor should it ever be. We can present new and exciting contemporary work just like they do in bigger cities. There is no reason why we shouldn’t. There are many incredible and important stories to tell and our community should have access to these works of art regardless of where they live.” Georgia Papanicolaou.

Samantha Branderhorst is one of the only female Technical Directors in the area.  Like Georgia, she also wanted to create unique experiences when it came to theatre.  A graduate of theatre studies at Queen’s University in  Kingston Ontario, she was well immersed in the arts scene and wanted to ensure that she would stay true to her creative values when moving back to The County, “Coming back here, I didn’t want to go back to creating digestible theatre. I wanted to create something that would leave a rock in people’s shows and take them to ‘I don’t know whether I like that or hate it, but I have to sit with it.”

As they discussed their vision, Papanicolaou and Branderhorst decided they could work together toward their dream of running a theatre company. Papanicoloau would take on the role of artistic director and Branderhorst technical director.

Georgia and Samantha look forward to presenting you unique pieces of theatre with local talent and opening up the world of performance arts looks like  in The County.
